I haven't seen any posts here about fungal acne, so I thought I would make one!

What is fungal acne?

It's a condition caused by excessive yeast growth on the skin. It's scientifically known as Malassezia Folliculitis.

Malassezia, also known as Pityrosporum, is a genus of fungi found on the skin surface of many animals, including humans

What causes fungal acne?

Excessive sweat.

Hot and humid conditions.

Excessive oil production.

Malassezia is lipophilic, it's attracted to oily substances, so any condition that triggers excessive oil production on the skin will be beneficial to this specie's growth.

Do I have fungal acne?

Fungal acne tends to appear on the chest, back, shoulders, scalp or face (T-zone, especially on the forehead); the areas with the highest amount of oil glands in the body.

Fungal acne shows as red or skin colored bumps that are uniform in size and appearance.

Fungal acne doesn't react to acne medications: benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, birth control, accutane...

It sometimes itches.

Note that it's hard to distinguish between "normal" acne, caused by bacteria, and fungal acne, caused by fungus.

In case you have clicked the link above, you may have noticed how similar it looks to traditional acne. Even doctors misdiagnose this condition with traditional acne, acne vulgaris.

Other diseases caused by fungus on the skin.

- Dandruff.

- Seborrhoeic dermatitis, seborrhoea.

- Tinea versicolor.

- Psoriasis.

Fungal Acne triggers

Fatty acids, esters, polysorbates, ferments, oils, and pretty much any fat present in cosmetics.

It's actually more complex than that, but I didn't want to make this post so long; and while reading studies published on the Internet about this topic I was mixing up things.

It's pretty overwhelming and difficult to understand; but, instead, I'm going to list some fungal acne safe products.

How to cure fungal acne.

- Use fungal acne safe products, avoid the above mentioned ingredients.

- Dandruff shampoo. As listed above, dandruff is also caused by Malasezzia yeasts, so the ingredients in dandruff shampoo will help to get rid of it. These include ketoconazole, selenium disulfide,

zinc pyrithione or climbazole. Any shampoo including these ingredients will do. Just apply to dry skin as a mask and let it sit for ten minutes or so. Do this regularly. Expect dryness.
